Question: What is Paz Digital's policy on upgrading OS or other software that comes with the hosting plan?
Answer: You probably have some experience with upgrading software. If so, you are probably also aware of some of the pitfalls involved with such upgrades. As we are responsible for the reliability and stability of hundreds of web sites and email systems, we are very careful when it comes to modifying our software. As a matter of policy, we do not roll out the latest changes unless it's subjected to our extensive internal testing for at least several months. Also, we believe that it's wise to let the new release 'burn-in" for several months, rather than roll out the changes hot off the press. Of course, there are some exceptions to this. When new security holes are identified and patches released we generally apply them immediately.

Question: What statistical package does Paz Digital offer?
Answer: All plans (except student) include Analog/Report Magic and our custom web-based interface. Also, you have access to raw access logs and are free to use the statistical packages of your choice.

Question: Do the accounts include Microsoft FrontPage support?
Answer: We will install the necessary extensions for you to use FrontPage and are happy to answer your questions related to the use of these extensions. FrontPage extensions are required to publish your site with FrontPage, and to run the tools supported by FrontPage: WebBots, To Do Lists and the FrontPage/Explorer interface. We support FrontPage 2002, 2000, 98 and 97. We not support problems and questions directly related to the use of FrontPage itself. Instead, we will direct you to Microsoft's FrontPage Technical Support.

Question: Does Paz Digital offer any database solutions?
Answer: We offer Access and MySQL (DSN if required) - check your hosting plan to see if it's included.

Question: I am getting a permission denied message in my ASP.net application
Answer: Try inserting the following command into your web.config file: <identity impersonate="true"/>. This will use IUSR_ServerName instead of the ASPNET account.

Question: I cannot view script errors in my ASP.net application
Answer: Create a file named web.config in the root folder of your website with the following text:
<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="Off"/>
<compilation debug="True"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>

Website Log Reports

Question: All this data is overwhelming - what are the important sections?
Answer: The General Summary contains some overall statistics about the data being analysed: the most important being the number of requests (the total number of files downloaded, including graphics); the number of requests for pages (just counting the various pages on your site); the number of distinct hosts (the number of different computers requests have come from); and the amount of data transferred in bytes. Bear in mind that one user can generate many requests by viewing lots of different pages or images, or by viewing the same page many times.

Question: How do you find out the number of hits from the data?
Answer: Our report doesn't use the word hits as it's a commonly misused term. The report uses requests for the number of transfers of any type of file (text, graphics, ...), and page requests for the number of transfers of HTML pages.

Question: Why are there so many referrers from my own site?
Answer: These come from all the internal links on your site, and all the graphics on your pages.

Question: Why doesn't the report agree with the counter on my page?
Answer: There are lots of possible reasons. Do they both start from the same date? Are you just looking at requests for that one page with analog, not for all your other pages and graphics? Also, analog will record all requests to that page; if it's a graphic, your counter will only measure requests from people on graphical browsers that reached that place on the page.

Question: Why do I only get "unresolved numerical addresses" in the Domain Report?
Answer: Try choosing the "Lookup unknown hostnames" option when creating the report to minimize the number of unresolved numerical addresses. It it normal for a relatively large percentage to appear in the report (not all IP addresses have a valid name associated with them).

Question: When someone reads a PDF file it scores dozens of hits.
Answer: PDF files are often downloaded and read one page at a time, and each page will then count as a separate request. Although this is not ideal, it's much less clear what to do about it. The report has no way of knowing how many pages constituted a single download in the reader's mind - it can only reliably report how many requests there were at the server, not guess what users did with the file later.
